More Than a Food Tour

The Chania Food Odyssey is a small-group Chania food tour that goes beyond simply tasting great food — it’s about understanding the city through its people, flavors and stories.

We’ll leave the typical tourist route behind and explore the city as locals experience it, from traditional flavors and family-run businesses to hidden streets, historic neighborhoods and local craftsmen.

Think of it less as a traditional guided tour and more as spending a morning in Chania with a local friend who wants to show you the places, food and stories that make this city special.

Highlights

  • Wander through Chania’s Old Town, where centuries of history, myths and local stories come to life.

  • Lose yourself in the hidden streets of the old Ottoman and Jewish quarters.

  • Meet some of Chania’s last traditional craftsmen and discover skills passed down through generations.

  • Taste authentic Cretan flavors, from local specialties to traditional mezedes and Cretan raki.

Meet-up Location
We will meet just outside the entrance of Kydon Hotel, here!

Full Itenerary
Your Chania Food Odyssey begins at Kydon Hotel before heading to our first delicious stop: Chania’s famous bougatsa. Over this beloved local specialty, we'll discover the world of Cretan cheese, why sheep and goat's milk dominate the island's cuisine, and the story behind one of Chania's most iconic morning treats.

From there, we'll continue with another Cretan favorite: kalitsounia. You'll taste different versions of these traditional pies, baked and fried, filled with local cheeses, wild greens and aromatic herbs. Along the way, you'll discover some of Crete's unique cheeses — including one with a name you definitely won't forget!

With our first tastings behind us, we'll leave the busy streets behind and begin wandering through the quieter lanes of Chania's Old Town. Rather than following the usual tourist route, we'll explore hidden corners while talking about the people, traditions and events that have shaped Crete into the island you see today.

As we walk, you'll start noticing details that are easy to miss on your own: the earthy colors of Chania's buildings, why Crete looks so different from the blue-and-white image associated with other Greek islands, traces of the city's many cultural influences, and little clues from the past hidden in the streets around us.

Our walk continues through neighborhoods where locals still meet for coffee, food and drinks, giving us the perfect opportunity to talk about everyday Cretan life. We'll also explore one of the most important ingredients of the Mediterranean diet — Cretan olive oil — and discover how it's produced and why it has played such an important role in life on the island.

Eventually, the narrow streets will lead us towards the old harbor, where the city opens up to views of the sea and the White Mountains. From there, we'll make our way to one of our favorite viewpoints over Chania — a perfect place to take in the city from above.

And by then, we'll definitely be hungry again.

We'll finish the experience the Cretan way: sitting around the table together. You'll enjoy a selection of traditional Cretan mezedes, what might be the best Greek salad you've ever tasted, and, of course, a glass of Cretan raki.

More than a tasting tour, this is a morning of food, conversation and discovery — a chance to experience Chania the way we would share it with visiting friends.
